WHERE ARE SEALEGS BOATS BUILT? Auckland, New Zealand

WHAT SIZES OF SEALEGS ARE AVAILABLE? Sealegs comes in three (3) models. A 6.1 metre (20ft)   RIB,  a 6.1 metre (20ft) D-Tube and a 7.1 metre (23ft.) RIB. These dimensions are overall with wheels in up position.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RIB & A D-TUBE? A RIB is a Rigid Inflatable Boat as has inflated tubes made of 828 grade Hypalon (a rubber compound), compared to a D-Tube which is an all aluminum boat made from 4mm 5083 Marine Grade aluminum. Our customers tend to be drawn to a RIB if they're looking for more recreational use that includes fishing, diving, water skiing and general boating. D-Tube owners tend to be more orientated to purely fishing and working their boats harder with Cray pots and scallop dredges etc.The D-Tube does offer the added Option of having Clears domed into the Bimini, which creates a sheltered forward cockpit area for those looking for extra protection from the weather. The RIB has the Option of a Bimini only.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH? 6.1m D-Tube = 1,090kgs (2400lbs) and the 6.1m RIB = 990kgs (2200lbs) (115hp E-Tec outboard and 80L fuel) 7.1m RIB = 1220kgs (2690lbs) (with 150 E-Tec outboard and 80L fuel).

DO THEY COME ANY BIGGER OR SMALLER? At the moment there is a Rigid Hull Inflatable and an Aluminum D-Tube which are both 6.1M (20ft) and based on the same hull design, as well as a bigger 7.1m (23ft) RIB model. They cannot be built smaller due to the size and weight of the hydraulic equipment required to make the amphibian perform in various conditions.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE ON LAND? Sealegs is driven hydraulically by an air-cooled motor under the seat. The air-cooled motor is a 16hp Honda, 2 cylinder, 2 stroke which uses the same petrol as the outboard.

HOW FAST DOES IT GO? 10km/h on the land, and 30-35 knots on the water. The wheel motors are low speed, high torque (although Sealegs did set a new World Speed Record for an amphibious boat of 105kmph on Sydney harbor, 7th December 2007)

DO YOU HAVE TO REGISTER IT? Each country is different but in general all boats must be registered. Most jurisdictions would not license Sealegs for use on a public road.

CAN THE BOATS DRIVE ON LAND IN REVERSE? Yes they can, at variable speeds up to 10kph (6mph)

WHAT SURFACES CAN IT DRIVE OVER? Sealegs will traverse considerable uneven surfaces due to it’s 18” (450mm) clearance. As a general rule Sealegs will operate over terrain that you would consider suitable for launching a boat and trailer using a vehicle.

HOW STEEP A GRADIENT WILL IT CLIMB? One in four gradient = 25 degree slope.

HOW LONG CAN I DRIVE WITH THE HONDA INBOARD MOTOR?
You can drive for a maximum of 10 minutes at 28degrees C, which is approximately 1km. Run time begins the moment you start the engine.

WHY ONLY 10 MINUTES OR 1km ON LAND? The Honda inboard engine and hydraulic transmission oil are air cooled, after 10 minutes of constant use it requires approximately 20 minutes to cool down before use again.

DO THE WHEELS CAUSE DRAG WHEN THE BOAT IS IN THE WATER?
No - all the wheels lift up and retract above the water line

CAN YOU LAND A SEALEGS BOAT ON A SURF BEACH?
We are aware of some Sealegs owners who do this successfully on a regular basis. However, Amphibious Boats Canada and Sealegs promotes responsible use of our amphibious craft at all times, and we advise that it is up to the seamanship and common sense of the person in charge of driving the boat to use their Sealegs boat in a manner that does not risk injury.

WHAT WIND AND SEA STATE CAN A SEALEGS BE OPERATED?
Sealegs boats are all certified to comply with CE category C, which is 2m swells and Beaufort wind scale 6.

WHERE IS THE FUEL TANK, AND HOW MUCH DOES IT HOLD?
The fuel tank is under the floor and has a capacity of 80 litres, which is about 3-4 toke tanks. The 7.1m model only also has the option of an additional 100L Auxiliary fuel tank.

WHAT IS THE HEIGHT WITH THE WINDSCREEN FOLDED DOWN?
2.38m (7' 1").

WHAT IS THE HIGHEST POINT WITH THE WINDSCREEN FOLDED DOWN WITH BOAT RESTING ON A TRAILER?
The Ski Hoop at 2.06m.

WHAT OUTOBARDS DO YOU SUPPLY WITH SEALEGS?
At the present time Sealegs fits each boat with the advanced Evinrude E-Tec 2 stroke oil injected outboards
For the 6.1 RIB and D-Tube models you can chose either a 90HP Evinrude E- TEC or the 115hp Evinrude E- TEC. On the 7.1m you can chose between the Evinrude E-Tec 115hp-HO series and the 150hp. Evinrude E-Tec outboards meet CE Proof standards needed for import into European and NA countries.

CAN I BUY A SEALEGS AMPHIBIOUS BOAT WITHOUT THE OUTBOARD MOTOR?
This option is available but not recommended. All Sealegs amphibious boats are manufactured with an integrated wiring loom that is custom made for our craft. The outboard ignition switch also controls the inboard motor and we have a dual charging system. We also sea trial everyone of our boats before shipping, and this can only be done with the outboard engine mounted. NOTE: Evinrude allows for world wide warranty even if the outboard is mounted in New Zealand. Some outboard manufacturers provide only in country warranty. In other words the engine needs to be bought in Canada if you wish to use other than an Evinrude.

WHAT IS THE LOA OF EACH MODEL WHEN ON A TRAILER?
Add 1m to the length of each model. So the 6.1m = 7.1m when on a trailer, and the 7.1m model = 8.1m when on a trailer. What is the LOA of the D-Tube with Bow Sprit option added? The length is 6.4m (21ft

CAN I RETRO FIT THE AMPHIBIOUS SYSTEM TO ANY BOAT?
No - With the two marinised hydraulic motors, three custom marine lift cylinders, custom front wheel steering cylinder, front and rear alloy legs/bushes/brackets, hydraulic tank, filters, hydraulic transmission pump and remote hydraulic joystick, hydraulic manifold block with valves, solenoids, flow divider, control electric’s, tandem hydraulic gear pump, 16hp Honda engine, throttle/choke control, cable, bell housing, torque coupler, inboard engine bed and engine box, custom stainless steel hubs, alloy rims and ATV tires plus all the hydraulic hoses and stainless steel fittings it makes it nearly impossible to retrofit. This also explains part of the extra cost of Sealegs amphibious boats. Refer: CONTACT US
